The Capitol features everywhere from teatowels to snow cones and there is no doubt about its classical proportions &#8211; it is an impressive building.<\/p>\n<p><img ID=\"image740\" SRC=\"http:\/\/lostbiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/w07capitol.jpg\" ALT=\"Capitol Washington DC\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Smithsonian Institution began as a private collection and its first building still houses part of the collection &#8211; mainly ethnographic material from the Africas. Known as &#8216;the castle&#8217; this red-brick building still has a lovely proportion to it. And the flower garden is stunning in Spring.<\/p>\n<p><img SRC=\"http:\/\/lostbiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/w07-smithscastle.jpg\" ALT=\"Smithsonian\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The entrance &#8211; part medieval, part romanesque still bears the inscription of the institution&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n<p><img SRC=\"http:\/\/lostbiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/w07smithsentrance.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, my stated &#8216;one nice thing&#8217; won&#8217;t happen as advertised &#8211; the National Museum of American History is closed for renovations and won&#8217;t re-open before 2008. So I&#8217;ll have to rethink this a bit.<\/p>\n<p><img SRC=\"http:\/\/lostbiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/w07smithsclosed.jpg\" ALT=\"Smithsonian closed\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I can console myself with some popcorn from one of these delightful stands along The Mall.<\/p>\n<p><img SRC=\"http:\/\/lostbiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/cart.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Other buildings include the impressive Jefferson Memorial overlooking the Potomac <\/p>\n<p><img SRC=\"http:\/\/lostbiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/w07lincolnmem.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Are we there yet?<\/p>\n<p><img SRC=\"http:\/\/lostbiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/washsign.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>And the quirky side might just emerge tomorrow \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Cheers<br \/>\nJerry<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are a number of iconic buildings in Washington DC.
